Telangana officials to map submergence for Tummidihatti barrage project
Irrigation Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy has ordered detailed mapping of areas affected by raising the reservoir level.
Telangana Irrigation Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy has directed officials to map the specific areas that would be submerged if the Tummidihatti barrage full reservoir level is raised from 148 metres to 152 metres, according to a report by Urban Acres.
The instruction follows discussions on October 26 between Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. Maharashtra has raised concerns regarding environmental impacts and submergence related to the inter-state project.
The proposed four-metre increase in height would raise storage capacity from 2.182 tmc ft to 5.697 tmc ft. Telangana seeks the higher level to ensure easier water flow to downstream structures.
Minister Reddy has asked officials to categorise affected zones, including residential settlements, revenue land, forests, and ecologically sensitive or protected areas. The mapping will also identify riverbed locations.
The project aims to divert 77 tmc of water to irrigate 5.85 lakh acres across seven districts. It is linked to the Sripada Yellampalli project and the Sundilla barrage.
Reddy has requested officials to find pragmatic engineering solutions that address the concerns of Maharashtra while meeting the irrigation goals of the state.
