New digital atlas maps Karnataka's historical heritage and landscapes
A Kannada-first platform developed by Sanchaya connects monuments, manuscripts, and dynasties through a searchable digital map.
A new digital platform called the Karnataka Historical Atlas has been developed in Bengaluru to map the state's history. According to Urban Acres, the Kannada-first tool allows users to navigate the past through timelines, maps, and curated resources.
The project was created by Sanchaya, a non-profit initiative focused on technology, the Kannada language, and cultural preservation. The atlas categorises information into sections such as dynastic timelines, district histories, the freedom movement, and natural history.
Sanchaya founder Omshivaprakash HL said the portal provides citable and verifiable resources from different sources. The platform uses official records and historical publications, including Epigraphia Indica and volumes of Ithihasa Darsha from the Karnataka Itihasa Academy.
The atlas is intended to serve as a research and learning companion rather than a replacement for school textbooks, Omshivaprakash said. It aims to help students and researchers understand the connections between specific places, time periods, and evidence.
While designed primarily in Kannada, the platform includes an English interface to assist with wider research. The initiative follows Sanchaya's work since 2010 to make Kannada literary and historical materials accessible through digital means.
