Four workers die after inhaling toxic gas in Ujjain hotel
The victims died while attempting to clean a food waste chamber at Hotel Shriganga on Saturday night.
Four workers died and one was injured after inhaling toxic gas at Hotel Shriganga on Dewas Road in Ujjain on Saturday night, according to reports by Free Press Journal, ANI and Hindustan Times.
The incident occurred around 10:30 pm when a food waste tank became clogged. District Collector Raushan Kumar Singh stated that two individuals entered the tank for cleaning, and two others subsequently entered in an attempt to rescue them.
Ujjain Superintendent of Police Pradeep Sharma said a gas leak likely made the surface extremely slippery, causing the workers to collapse. A sanitation worker named Hemraj managed to exit the chamber after experiencing dizziness and breathing difficulties.
Madhav Nagar police and a rescue team arrived at the scene. Because the chamber opening could not be unlocked, a cutting machine was used to open the metal door. After approximately 90 minutes, the four workers were pulled out, but they could not be revived despite CPR being administered.
Three police personnel, including Sub-Inspector Dharmendra Singh Tomar and Constable Santosh, sustained injuries during the rescue operation. The deceased have been identified as Kamlesh and Nitin from Valmiki Nagar, Wahid from Somwariya, and Manoj from Jhalawar.
Police are investigating whether safety protocols were followed and if necessary equipment was provided. The role of the hotel management is also under scrutiny as post-mortem examinations are conducted at the district hospital.
