Guwahati marks 108th birth anniversary of Pulin Das
Speakers at an event in Guwahati recalled the contributions of former cricketer and journalist Pulin Das to sports in Assam.
A programme was held at the India Club in Guwahati on November 1 to remember sports organiser, journalist, and former cricketer Pulin Das on his 108th birth anniversary, according to The News Mill.
The event, organised by the Pulin Das Memorial Committee, featured a discussion on the changing face of Indian sports. Former badminton player Mallika Barua Sarma said Indian sportspersons have become more ambitious and are making their mark across various disciplines compared to the past.
Barua Sarma stated that Neeraj Chopra’s 2021 Olympic gold helped change the mindset of young Indian athletes, making them more fearless. Former badminton player Pradip Chaliha also spoke about his childhood association with Das and his influence on Assam sports.
Born in Guwahati on November 1, 1918, Das was a member of Assam’s first Ranji Trophy team in 1949. He served as secretary of the Assam Cricket Association, which he helped form in 1947 with Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi.
Das was a sports journalist for The Assam Tribune and The Statesman, and a reviewer for All India Radio. He was also involved in founding the Lokapriya Bordoloi Trophy in 1952 and participated in football refereeing and cricket umpiring.
Kalyan Kumar Das, the son of Pulin Das and secretary of the memorial committee, said the programme aimed to highlight his father's contributions and inspire younger generations.
