Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan sent to 14-day judicial custody
A special Ghaziabad court remanded the veteran leader to Dasna District Jail on Sunday in a money laundering case.
A special Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) court in Ghaziabad sent senior Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan to 14-day judicial custody on Sunday. According to The Hindu, the order was issued by Special Court Judge Avanish Kumar Pandey regarding a money laundering case related to the Jauhar Trust.
Khan will spend the 14-day period at Ghaziabad's Dasna District Jail, according to his lawyer, Danish Ali. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) arrested Khan on Saturday, shortly after he and his son, Abdullah Azam Khan, were released on bail from Rampur jail in an alleged dual PAN card case.
The ED stated that Khan is the founder of Maulana Mohammad Ali Jauhar Trust and Chancellor of Mohammad Ali Jauhar University. The agency alleged that funds meant for public works were diverted to the university and that government works were executed on its private campus.
The ED also claimed that funds from contractors with government contracts were routed back to the Trust as donations. On 28 October, the agency provisionally attached the land and buildings of the university, which have a current market value of approximately Rs 1,170 crore.
The investigation involves multiple FIRs. The ED has taken cognisance of 58 FIRs registered by the Uttar Pradesh Police against Khan and his associates. The agency's lawyers requested custody to interrogate the leader regarding financial transactions and the transfer of benami properties.
