Tamil Nadu increases dearness allowance to 63 per cent

The revision will benefit approximately 16 lakh employees, teachers, pensioners and family pensioners in the state, according to Telangana Today.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has ordered a three per cent rise in dearness allowance for state teachers, government employees, pensioners and family pensioners. The increase moves the allowance from 60 per cent to 63 per cent, according to a notification from Telangana Today.

The revised rate will apply retrospectively from July 1, 2026. This decision follows a similar move by the Union government to increase dearness allowance for central employees from 60 per cent to 63 per cent, effective July 1.

The state government stated that the measure will cost the exchequer an additional Rs 1,858 crore annually. The administration said it would provide the necessary funds to support the welfare of both serving and retired personnel.

Approximately 16 lakh people are expected to benefit from the change. The government noted that the increase, announced ahead of Deepavali, aims to help beneficiaries celebrate the festival.

The notification highlighted that government officials and teachers play a vital role in planning and delivering public welfare schemes. While the effective date is set for July, the government has not specified when arrears will be paid.
