Tasmac outlet near Vaniyambadi closed after residents' prolonged struggle

The Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation Limited outlet in Vijayapuram village was relocated to Kodiyur village on Sunday.

A Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation Limited (Tasmac) outlet in Vijayapuram village, near Vaniyambadi in Tirupattur, was closed on Sunday. According to The Hindu, the closure ends a struggle by local residents that had been ongoing since the outlet was established in 2012.

The outlet was located on the Vaniyambadi–Alangayam Main Road, near a government high school, a health centre, and several local temples. Residents noted that commuters from 12 surrounding farming villages use this road to board long-distance buses to locations including Jolarpet, Tirupattur, Ambur, Krishnagiri, Vellore, and Kancheepuram.

Residents alleged that inebriated persons have recently attacked innocent villagers and engaged in petty fights. They also stated that people were frequently found lying on the road in an inebriated state, which affected traffic movement on the route.

Tasmac officials said the outlet has been relocated to an isolated building in Kodiyur village near Tirupattur town. Resident G. Suganthi said the outlet has been permanently shut down and that a vigil will be kept to ensure it is not reopened.
