Two AAP MLAs resign from party over Punjab government issues

Chethan Singh Jouramajra and Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra quit the Aam Aadmi Party citing the drug menace and state debt.

Two Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLAs, Chetan Singh Jouramajra from Samana and Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra from Sanour, resigned from the party's primary membership on Sunday. Jouramajra, a former minister, announced his decision via social media, while Pathanmajra sent his resignation letter to AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal.

The legislators criticised the Bhagwant Mann government regarding the drug menace, outstanding debt, and the failure to amend the anti-sacrilege law despite Akal Takht directions. Jouramajra also cited the murder of anti-drug activist Parvinder Singh Jhota, the suicide of Dalit Gulzar Singh, the failure to provide minimum support price on crops, and a shortage of teachers in government schools.

Pathanmajra raised concerns over the state's growing debt and claimed that AAP leaders from Delhi are running the Mann government, alleging local MLAs cannot sign files. Regarding his future political affiliation, Pathanmajra stated they would join a party that benefits Punjab.

AAP Punjab chief spokesperson Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal and Punjab AAP chief Aman Arora criticised the BJP for attempting to induct leaders rejected by other parties. Arora stated on X that the BJP has no support base of its own and questioned the induction of individuals facing legal allegations.

The resignations occurred one day after AAP released its first of 40 candidates for the 2027 Punjab Assembly polls. The party has not yet declared candidates for Samana or Sanour.
