Vizhinjam International Port handles first import container from China
The shipment of engineered building boards arrived on Saturday, marking the start of direct import operations at the facility.
Vizhinjam International Port has handled its first import container, which arrived from Ningbo, China, on Saturday aboard the MSC Sabrina III, according to Urban Acres.
The shipment, containing engineered building boards for the construction sector, was booked by Thiruvananthapuram-based startup BSG Logistics and Ship Chandlers Private Ltd for Altair Group.
Vizhinjam International Seaport Ltd managing director Jeromic George flagged off the truck carrying the container from the port, port authorities stated.
The arrival allows goods to be unloaded, cleared through customs, and moved to Kerala markets without depending on other ports for the import leg.
Port authorities said the facility is moving towards directly serving importers in Kerala, expanding its role beyond transshipment operations.
The authorities said this facility could reduce dependence on other ports, lower freight costs, and support job creation in Thiruvananthapuram and southern districts.
