Hyderabad Water Board launches green tanker service for non-domestic water use
The initiative aims to conserve drinking water by supplying treated wastewater from sewage treatment plants for construction and landscaping purposes.
The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) launched a green water tanker programme across Hyderabad on Sunday, according to The Hindu.
The initiative, which coincided with the Board’s 37th Foundation Day, follows a directive from Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy to reduce fresh drinking water use for non-domestic purposes.
HMWS&SB managing director K. Ashok Reddy said the service will help conserve drinking water resources and reduce dependence on groundwater. He stated that drinking water should be used for domestic needs, while treated wastewater should be used for non-potable purposes.
The programme will supply treated wastewater from registered Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) using branded green tankers. These tankers will display stickers stating they are strictly for non-domestic use and not for drinking.
In the initial phase, the service will operate with 28 green tankers across 19 STPs. Priority will be given to government departments, public parks, and greenery-related requirements.
The board has received registrations from approximately 100 tankers belonging to private companies, HMDA, and GHMC. A dedicated booking system, GPS tracking, and e-POS systems will be implemented soon to manage the tankers.
