Owaisi uses Abdul metaphor to target SP and Congress in UP

AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi urges Muslims to seek independent leadership instead of laying carpets for other parties.

AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi has used the metaphor of 'Abdul' to target the Samajwadi Party and Congress ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, according to a report by India Today.

During a rally in Rampur on October 18, Owaisi stated that Abdul would no longer serve the SP and Congress. He has called for independent Muslim leadership in the state to ensure the community's political agency.

The 'Abdul laying carpet' trope has been used by Owaisi since his 2021 campaign in Muzaffarnagar. He argued that poor Muslims need an independent political voice rather than acting as a vote bank for other parties.

In March 2024, Owaisi claimed there was a conspiracy to end minority political representation after Moradabad MP Syed Tufail Hasan was denied an SP ticket. He suggested leaders wanted Muslims to keep laying carpets for them.

The metaphor has been used by various political figures in the state. In 2022, Fasahat Ali Khan Shanu, an aide of Azam Khan, used the term regarding Muslim supporters, while Azam Khan later used it against Shanu after he joined the BJP.

Congress leaders from Hyderabad have responded to the messaging by asking Owaisi why he has not created more Muslim leaders in Telangana.
