Congress alleges police harassed workers heading to Delhi rally
Haryana Congress leaders accused authorities of stopping party workers, while police maintained that security checks were routine procedures.
Congress leaders in Haryana alleged on Sunday that party workers travelling to a rally at Ramlila Maidan in Delhi were stopped and inconvenienced by police, according to The Times of India.
Former Gohana MLA Jagbir Malik alleged that several workers faced harassment and difficulties at the border. Badli MLA Kuldeep Vats also said he was intercepted near the Bajghera toll post while travelling to the venue, though he eventually reached the location with his supporters.
Vats accused the BJP government of being apprehensive about the party's public support. He stated that while roads could be blocked, people's resolve could not be stopped.
Sonipat police spokesperson ASI Ravinder Singh denied the allegations, stating that checkpoints were established at border points due to heightened vigilance following pollution-related restrictions. He said vehicles were checked as part of routine procedure and no one was unnecessarily stopped.
Inspector Rakesh, SHO of Bahadurgarh City police station, also denied claims of harassment, saying commuters travelled peacefully without any problems.
Police have deployed personnel at 12 locations in Sonipat, including the Singhu-Kundli border, Saboli and Auchandi. The checks follow restrictions effective November 1 regarding vehicles that do not meet BS-VI emission standards.
