Bethora gram sabha adjourned over Goa plot development dispute
More than 150 villagers refused to confirm meeting minutes, alleging the panchayat ignored a previous resolution against plot development.
The gram sabha of the Bethora-Nirankal-Conxem-Codar village panchayat in Goa’s Ponda area was adjourned on Sunday, according to Urban Acres. The adjournment occurred after over 150 residents refused to confirm the minutes of the previous meeting.
Villagers questioned the panchayat secretary after the reading of the minutes, alleging that permissions were granted for plot development at Bethora. Residents claimed the gram sabha had previously passed a resolution opposing such projects within its jurisdiction.
Sarpanch Akshay Gaonkar attempted to pacify the gathering, stating that the necessary permissions were issued in line with court directives. However, the meeting was adjourned because residents declined to confirm the minutes.
Villager Devendra Chari alleged that a resolution passed on July 19 prohibited plot development, but the panchayat granted permission during a meeting on July 29. Chari also claimed a plot owner had illegally cut a hill.
Residents linked the development to local water issues, with Chari stating that Bethora is already facing a water shortage. He said further development could worsen the crisis.
Dnyaneshwar Khandeparkar, a resident of Kasamshell-Bethora, said villagers intend to challenge the decision. The specific legal process for this challenge was not stated.
