BJP and Shiv Sena criticise Dia Mirza over Diwali campaign

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation deleted a video of the actor following objections from the Mumbai BJP chief.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) removed a video featuring actor Dia Mirza from its pollution-free Diwali campaign on Monday. According to The Assam Tribune, the decision followed objections from Mumbai BJP chief Ameet Satam regarding her participation in the awareness initiative.

The civic body had requested citizens to opt for an eco-friendly Diwali and refrain from bursting firecrackers. This appeal came after a Bombay High Court directive concerning increasing air pollution levels in Mumbai. The campaign included messages from various celebrities, such as Madhuri Dixit and cricketer Ajinkya Rahane.

Ameet Satam criticised the inclusion of Mirza on X, stating that traditions are deeply rooted in culture and that people do not need lessons from outsiders on how to celebrate the festival. BJP MLC Shrikant Bharatiya also suggested that the actor should introspect and understand the practices of the community she represents.

Union Minister Ramdas Athawale noted that while Mirza is from the Muslim community, the matter is not about any specific religion. He said that while firecrackers are part of Diwali, there is a need to address excessive pollution.

Shiv Sena National Spokesperson Shaina NC stated that every citizen understands the importance of being mindful of pollution. She added that people must prioritise health and safety during the Festival of Lights.
