Elon Musk says Grok Bot serving costs are unsustainably high

The xAI founder admitted that the cost of running the autonomous agent is too high relative to the revenue it generates.

Elon Musk has stated that the cost of serving xAI's Grok Bot is unsustainably high compared to its revenue, according to a report by the Times of India.

The admission followed a request from a paying subscriber on X for an early reset of weekly usage quotas. Musk noted that the unit economics for the tool are not good.

Grok Bot, which xAI launched in August 2026, functions as an autonomous agent that can navigate the web and execute multi-step workflows. These processes consume significantly more graphics processing unit (GPU) cycles than standard text generation.

The agent is bundled into existing paid tiers, including $30-per-month SuperGrok subscriptions and Cursor developer plans. While reports from Teslanorth indicated the bot reached roughly 800,000 paid weekly active users within two months, this expansion appears to have increased the compute deficit.

Musk previously suggested adding sponsored links and advertisements to Grok's outputs to fund expensive GPUs. Gartner senior director analyst Will Sommer recently noted that an AI infrastructure provider would need to earn a margin of over 100 per cent on monetised tokens between 2026 and 2030.
