Fishing ban begins along Odisha coast to protect Olive Ridley turtles
Mechanised boats and trawlers are prohibited from entering within 20 km of the coastline from November 1 until May 31.
A fishing ban intended to safeguard Olive Ridley sea turtles has come into effect along a stretch of the Odisha coast on November 1, according to Kalinga TV.
The state government has prohibited mechanised fishing boats and trawlers from operating within 20 km of the coast between November 1 and May 31.
The restrictions cover significant coastal areas, including the river mouths of Devi, Dhamra, Rushikulya, and Barunei.
These measures aim to protect millions of Olive Ridley turtles that arrive on the Odisha coast to nest and breed, including lakhs that land at Gahirmatha for mass nesting.
To ensure the ban is followed, the Forest Department, Marine Police, and Coast Guard have increased their vigil during the annual conservation drive.
The administration has also stepped up monitoring to assist the endangered marine animals and support safe breeding.
