Four hotel workers die after inhaling toxic gas in Ujjain

Two additional people were hospitalised after attempting to rescue the workers from a food waste chamber on Saturday night.

Four hotel employees died after inhaling toxic gas while cleaning a waste chamber at a hotel on Dewas Road in Ujjain on Saturday night, according to ANI. The incident occurred at the Shri Ganga Hotel on the Ujjain-Dewas Road around 11 pm on October 31.

District Collector Raushan Kumar Singh said two individuals initially entered the food waste tank for cleaning. Two more people reportedly entered the tank to rescue them, resulting in a total of four deaths.

Ujjain Police Superintendent Pradeep Sharma stated that a gas leak likely made the chamber floor extremely slippery, causing the workers to collapse. Police had to use a cutting machine to gain access to the chamber. After the victims were pulled out, personnel administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), but the four men were declared dead at the hospital.

The deceased have been identified as Kamlesh Tamboli, Nitin Valmik, Manoj Meena and Wahid. Two other individuals who entered the chamber during the rescue attempt were hospitalised in stable condition.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav expressed grief over the deaths and announced that the families of the four victims would receive ₹4 lakh each. The district administration has initiated an investigation into the circumstances of the incident.
