Maharashtra to launch new maritime development policy

The state aims to boost port infrastructure and coastal shipping through an investment-friendly policy featuring a single window clearance mechanism.

The Maharashtra government is working on a new maritime development policy to improve port infrastructure and coastal shipping, according to BusinessLine.

Speaking at the FICCI Maritime India conference in Mumbai on Monday, Fisheries and Port Development Minister Nitesh Rane said the policy will be investment friendly and include a single window clearance mechanism.

The state is competing with Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh to attract shipyards, build ports, and develop coastal shipping networks.

Rane stated that the government wants to attract ancillary industries to develop a maritime eco-system and is in talks with Dutch companies regarding the development of minor ports.

Last month, the state government signed an MOU with Mazagon Dock to develop a shipyard worth Rs 26,000 crore in the state.

The government is also developing a water transport system in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, which is expected to be ready in 2028, Rane said.
