Madhya Pradesh police inspector killed by truck during liquor smuggling probe

Khategaon station in-charge Dilip Puri died after a truck driver allegedly ran him over on the Indore-Betul highway.

A town inspector was killed in Madhya Pradesh's Dewas district late on Sunday night when a truck ran over him during an operation to intercept a vehicle suspected of carrying illicit liquor, according to reports from Hindustan Times and The Assam Tribune.

Khategaon Police Station in-charge Dilip Puri, a 2007-batch Sub-Inspector, was conducting a check on the Harda-Nemawar highway following a tip-off that a truck was transporting liquor from Harda to Gujarat via Indore.

Dewas Superintendent of Police Aditya Mishra said that more than five police teams, including officers from Kannod and Satwas, were formed to intercept the vehicle. The truck had reportedly stopped for the driver to drink water when Puri approached and asked the driver to step out.

During the encounter, the driver allegedly steered the truck onto the divider in an attempt to flee, causing Puri to fall and be run over by the rear wheel. The driver then abandoned the vehicle near Sandalpur and fled the scene.

Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has ordered a fair investigation and dispatched special director general Upendra Jain to the site. The Chief Minister also announced a compassionate appointment for Puri's wife as a Sub-Inspector and financial assistance of Rs 1 crore for his family.

Police have seized the truck, which bore registration number MP 43 H 4786, and are searching for the absconding driver. Officials are also working to identify the owners of the vehicle and the liquor it was carrying.
