Nandini curd prices to be cut by Rs 2 per litre
Karnataka Chief Minister DK Shivakumar said the KMF will lower curd rates following public backlash and opposition criticism.
Karnataka Chief Minister DK Shivakumar said on Monday that the Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) has agreed to lower Nandini curd prices by Rs 2 per litre. According to India Today, the Chief Minister made this suggestion to KMF office-bearers during a felicitation ceremony.
The decision follows a price increase of up to Rs 14 per kg that took effect on November 1. Under the previous rates, a 500-gram pouch cost Rs 28 and a one-kg pouch cost Rs 54, while the revised prices are Rs 34 and Rs 68 respectively.
The price hike drew criticism from the BJP and the Bangalore Hotels Association, who described the increase as excessive. The BJP women's wing also held a demonstration at Freedom Park in Bengaluru on Monday to demand a rollback.
Defending the milk price revision, Shivakumar said the change would benefit 11 lakh farmer families across the state. He noted that milk with higher fat content is priced higher and claimed the rates help prevent milk from being diverted to other states.
BAMUL president and D K Suresh said the hike would also support 25 lakh milk sellers. He noted that daily milk production in the state is 1.15 crore litres and that milk prices in Tamil Nadu have increased by Rs 12.
