Delhi air quality hits very poor category as winter curbs begin

The city's Air Quality Index rose to 307 on Monday as new pollution control measures took effect.

Delhi's air pollution intensified on Monday, with the city's Air Quality Index (AQI) reaching 307 at 7 am, according to Central Pollution Control Board data reported by Business Standard. The reading placed the capital in the 'very poor' category.

Jahangirpuri recorded the highest AQI at 417, which falls into the 'severe' category. Other areas with high readings included Punjabi Bagh at 398, Rohini at 397, and Alipur at 379. In neighbouring regions, Noida recorded an AQI of 308, while Ghaziabad stood at 276 and Gurugram at 225.

The deterioration comes as expanded winter pollution-control measures came into force on November 1. Under these rules, non-BS-VI vehicles registered outside Delhi, excluding electric and CNG vehicles, face entry restrictions. The 'No PUC, No Fuel' policy is also being enforced, requiring a valid Pollution Under Control Certificate.

The Winter Action Plan includes a 50 per cent physical attendance rule for government and private offices. Additionally, outdoor construction and dust-related demolition activities are restricted from November 1 to January 31, with exceptions for essential infrastructure. The Centre has also announced a total suspension of construction and demolition work across the NCR from November 5 to 20.
