Chennai and Tiruvallur schools and colleges closed due to Cyclone Murasu

District collectors announced holidays for educational institutions on Monday as heavy rainfall is expected due to the severe cyclonic storm.

Schools and colleges in several Tamil Nadu districts, including Chennai and Tiruvallur, will remain closed on Monday, November 2, 2026, according to The Hindu.

District collectors announced the holidays as a precaution against heavy rainfall expected from Severe Cyclone Murasu. The storm intensified into a severe cyclonic storm over the West Central and Southwest Bay of Bengal in the early hours of Monday.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) stated that the storm is expected to hit the coast between Narsapur and Nellore in Andhra Pradesh on the morning of November 3. Wind speeds are predicted to be 100-110 km/h, with gusts reaching 120 km/h.

Heavy rainfall is likely in isolated areas of Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Ranipet, and Nilgiris districts on Monday. Chennai District Collector S. Malathi Helen has declared a holiday for schools because of the anticipated rain.

The cyclonic storm moved west-northwestwards at 25 kmph over the last six hours. Greater Chennai Corporation Commissioner G.S. Sameeran inspected the city at the ICCC in Ripon Buildings after continuous rain began on Sunday night.
