Cyclone Murasu threatens Odisha with heavy rain

The India Meteorological Department has issued an orange warning for five southern districts as the system moves towards the Andhra Pradesh coast.

Cyclone Murasu is expected to bring heavy rainfall to parts of Odisha, particularly in the south, over the coming days, according to the Deccan Chronicle.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange warning for Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput and Malkangiri, predicting heavy to very heavy rain at certain locations on November 3 and 4.

While the cyclone is not predicted to make direct landfall in Odisha, its movement towards the south Andhra Pradesh coast is likely to cause widespread thunderstorms and rain.

The IMD expects the system to become a severe cyclonic storm in the Bay of Bengal on Monday and cross the coast between Nellore and Narasapur by the morning of November 3.

Wind speeds during landfall are anticipated to be between 100-110 kmph, with gusts reaching 120 kmph.

A yellow warning for rain and thunderstorms has been issued for 16 districts. On Monday, Ganjam and Gajapati may see 7 cm to 12 cm of rain at isolated spots.

Rainfall is expected to continue on November 4 in Nuapada, Nayagarh, Puri, Khordha, Bolangir and Bargarh, alongside the five districts under orange warning.

The IMD advised people to monitor weather updates and seek shelter during thunderstorms to avoid lightning. Rainfall should decrease from November 5.
