Chennai may receive heavy rains as Cyclone Murasu approaches Andhra coast
The India Meteorological Department projects Cyclone Murasu will make landfall in the Nellore-Kavali belt by Tuesday morning.
Chennai is likely to receive rainfall from Sunday night as Cyclone Murasu approaches the south Andhra Pradesh coast, according to the Deccan Chronicle.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) stated that the cyclone is expected to cross the south Andhra coast on Tuesday morning in the Nellore-Kavali belt.
The system, a deep depression over the southeast and adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal, was moving west-northwestwards at 20 kmph on Sunday morning.
The IMD said the cyclone is likely to cross the coast between Nellore and Narsapur by Tuesday morning with sustained wind speeds of 100-110 kmph and gusts reaching 120 kmph.
Heaviest rainfall is expected on the coastal stretch between Sriharikota and Nellore, while squally weather is likely to begin along the north Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts.
The IMD has advised fishermen not to venture into the sea and told those in deep-sea areas to return to the coast immediately.
