Pawan Khera criticises Amit Shah over Hyderabad visit and Manipur crisis

The Congress leader questioned why the Union Home Minister is campaigning in Telangana instead of addressing ethnic violence in Manipur.

Congress leader Pawan Khera on Tuesday criticised Union Home Minister Amit Shah for prioritising political campaigns over national security concerns. According to the Deccan Chronicle, Khera's remarks followed Shah's visit to Hyderabad to lead the 'Loktantra Bachao, Arajakta Hatao' march.

Khera questioned the government's focus on campaigning in Telangana while ethnic violence continues in Manipur. He noted that five Kuki men were recently killed in Manipur within a 24-hour period.

The Congress leader stated that the Home Minister has a responsibility to step in regarding the situation in Manipur. Khera suggested that if an on-ground assessment is logistically difficult, the Union leadership should convene emergency reviews in the national capital.

Khera said that the Home Minister could visit Manipur even if only for formality. He claimed that if the Home Minister is too scared to go, he should at least convene an urgent high-level meeting in Delhi to take stock of the situation.

The Congress leader further alleged that for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the situation in Manipur can wait, noting that the humanitarian crisis has persisted since May 2023.
