SIT formed to probe liquor smuggling after MP cop's death
A Special Investigation Team will investigate an illegal alcohol network after a police officer was killed by a truck in Dewas.
A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been established to investigate an alleged liquor smuggling network in Madhya Pradesh's Dewas district, according to The Hawk. The decision follows the death of Khategaon police station in-charge Dilip Puri, who was killed by a truck during an operation late on Sunday night.
The incident occurred on the Harda-Nemawar highway between 1 am and 2 am. Police had received intelligence that a truck was transporting illegal alcohol from Harda to Gujarat via Indore. Dewas Superintendent of Police (SP) Aditya Mishra had formed more than five teams, including personnel from Khategaon, Kannod, Satwas, and Nemawar, to intercept the vehicle.
During the operation, the truck driver reportedly stopped to drink water. When Puri approached the driver to demand he get out of the vehicle, a confrontation occurred. The driver allegedly tried to flee, causing Puri to fall and be run over by the rear wheel of the truck.
Police seized the vehicle, an Eicher truck with registration number MP 43 H 4786, and recovered more than 1,800 litres of alcohol. Officials stated the liquor was being moved without purchase bills. The driver has been arrested, and police are investigating the circumstances of his detention.
The SIT will examine the source of the liquor, its destination, and the financial involvement of those in the logistics network. Preliminary investigations have identified Rahul Jaiswal, a resident of Harda, in connection with the matter. Authorities are also looking into the possible involvement of smugglers from Dewas.
Puri was a 2007-batch Sub-Inspector who had previously served at the Heera Nagar and Chandan Nagar police stations in Indore.
