Assam police arrest six for multi-crore financial fraud
Investigators are probing suspected links between the interstate fraud network and Pakistan Intelligence Operatives.
The Special Task Force (STF) of Assam Police arrested six people in connection with an organised financial fraud syndicate using mule bank accounts, according to ANI on Monday. Officials said the group is suspected of having links to Pakistan Intelligence Operatives (PIOs).
The crackdown followed intelligence from central agencies, including Military Intelligence in Gajraj, Tezpur, regarding an interstate network using compromised accounts. The investigation began after the Sonitpur Police filed a complaint at the STF Police Station.
Chief Public Relations Officer Rajib Saikia said a State Bank of India account held by Marjina Begum of Ganesh Nagar, Guwahati, received lakhs of rupees between June 22 and August 5, 2026. Saikia noted that funds were withdrawn immediately after each deposit, a pattern typical of mule accounts.
The STF arrested Begum, Mofijul Haque (22), and Himangshu Das (19) during a raid on October 28. Following interrogation, police arrested Rakib Hussain (34) on October 29, and Iftar Hussain (25) and Arman Azuz Hoque (20) on October 30.
Authorities seized laptops, mobile phones, ATM cards, and other documents during the raids. Police believe the network has been active across several states for almost two years, with a suspected mastermind operating from outside Assam.
The STF is currently working to find remaining members, trace the movement of illicit money, and establish the full extent of the suspected connections to anti-national elements.
