Airlines must provide detailed fare breakup and cancellation charges
The civil aviation ministry notified new rules under the Bharatiya Vayuyan Niyam, 2026, which will come into effect from January 1, 2027.
Airlines will be required to provide passengers with a detailed breakup of various charges, including cancellation fees, at the time of booking tickets, according to a report by India Today.
Under the Bharatiya Vayuyan Niyam, 2026, notified on October 31, airlines must display the total amount, fare, tax, fees, cancellation charges, and refund conditions separately on booking websites and tickets.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) will monitor the tariffs fixed by airlines. These new rules, framed under the Bharatiya Vayuyan Vidheyak, 2024, will replace the Aircraft Rules, 1937.
The civil aviation ministry can intervene regarding airfares during an "extraordinary situation". The rules state that if the central government considers such a situation has arisen, it may issue written directions in the public interest.
The source noted that specifics regarding what constitutes an "extraordinary situation" were not mentioned. The new framework replaces the 90-year-old Aircraft Act, 1934.
