Andhra Pradesh and Odisha prepare for Cyclone Murasu landfall

Authorities in Odisha have moved 160,000 people to safety as the cyclone approaches the Andhra Pradesh coast.

Severe Cyclonic Storm Murasu is expected to make landfall near Kavali town in Andhra Pradesh between 8 pm and 10 pm on Monday, according to reports from ANI and Hindustan Times. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) stated the storm was located over the west-central Bay of Bengal, approximately 120 km east-southeast of Nellore.

Nellore District Collector Himanshu Shukla said the cyclone is likely to impact both Nellore and Prakasam districts. He advised residents to stay indoors and noted that cyclone shelters have been opened for those facing flooding. Shukla also warned of possible disruptions to bus and railway services.

In Andhra Pradesh, at least 19 domestic flights were cancelled at the Vijayawada, Tirupati, and Visakhapatnam airports on Monday. Three NDRF teams consisting of 90 personnel have been deployed to assist with disaster management.

Odisha has relocated more than 160,000 people to safer areas, with the state government aiming to move a total of 330,000 people. Some southern districts in the state have closed schools and colleges until November 3.

The IMD warned that wind speeds could reach 100-110 kmph, with gusts up to 120 kmph. In Tamil Nadu, heavy rains were recorded in Chennai and Tiruvallur, with Madhavaram reporting 11 cm of rainfall over the last 24 hours.
