Guwahati Police Commissioner Dr Partha Sarathi Mahanta has been selected for the Kendriya Grihmantri Dakshata Padak 2026, according to Mathrubhumi. Mahanta, who is an Inspector General of Police and heads the Assam Special Task Force (STF), is among 19 Assam Police personnel chosen for the award.
The award, instituted by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs on February 1, 2024, recognises contributions in intelligence, forensic science, investigation and special operations. The 2026 awardees were announced on October 31.
Mahanta previously headed the Assam STF during the operation in March 2024 that led to the arrest of suspected ISIS India chief Haris Ajmal Farooqui and associate Anurag Singh in Dhubri. Since its revival in March 2023, the STF has arrested 21 people suspected of links to extremist organisations, including Maoists and ULFA-I.
The STF also conducted anti-narcotics operations between March 2023 and December 2024, recovering over 59 kg of heroin, nearly four tonnes of ganja and 37.26 kg of opium. During this period, the force conducted 254 operations and arrested 482 people.
Beyond policing, Mahanta is a filmmaker and writer. His documentary ‘Hargila - The Greater Adjutant Stork’ received a Special Mention at the 70th National Film Awards, and his animated film ‘Lachit: The Warrior’ has been screened at international film festivals.
