Assam to set up Skill India International Centre for overseas employment

The centre will provide industry-aligned training and international certifications to help Northeast youth access global job markets, according to The Hawk.

The Assam government and the Centre have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a Skill India International Centre (SIIC) in Guwahati. The agreement was exchanged on Monday during the Northeast Tourism and Hospitality Skill Conclave 2026, reported The Hawk.

The proposed centre aims to provide industry-aligned training and internationally recognised certifications to youths seeking employment abroad. It is intended to strengthen the skill development ecosystem and create pathways for young people from the Northeast to enter international markets.

Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship and Education, Jayant Chaudhary, and Assam Skill, Employment and Entrepreneurship Minister Biswajit Daimary attended the conclave. Chaudhary emphasised the importance of strengthening regional infrastructure and creating structured pathways for international jobs.

Daimary stated that Assam's youth must be equipped with industry-relevant skills to benefit from global employment opportunities. He also highlighted the potential of the tourism and hospitality sector in the Northeast.

The event also saw the declaration of a cluster under the PM-SETU initiative. This involves the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, the Assam government, National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC), Numaligarh Refinery Limited, and Oil India Limited to improve coordination between employers and training institutions.
