Assam CM welcomes bullet train connectivity to Guwahati
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the extension of the North Corridor will create opportunities for businesses and livelihoods in the region.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday welcomed the Union Government's decision to link Guwahati to the national capital via a bullet train. According to The Pioneer, Sarma stated that the Centre listens to the requirements of the people.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced on Saturday that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the ‘North Corridor’ of the bullet train project. This route will connect Delhi, Agra, Kanpur, Lucknow, Ayodhya, Varanasi, Prayagraj, Patna, and Siliguri, before extending to Guwahati.
Sarma noted on social media that the connection could allow travel between Guwahati and Delhi in less than 8 hours. He described the extension of the northern corridor into the North East as a significant development for East India.
The Chief Minister said the corridor was originally intended to terminate at Siliguri. He mentioned that following a written request and a meeting with Vaishnaw in July, the proposal to extend the line was approved.
Sarma expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Modi and Vaishnaw for the project. He added that as Assam prepares for a new wave of high-tech industries, the fast connectivity to Delhi and two other state capitals will provide opportunities for livelihoods and businesses.
