Telangana cancer portal logs 35,000 cases
The state has expanded cancer treatment services to all 33 districts to reduce patient travel to Hyderabad.
Telangana has registered 35,000 cancer cases on its dedicated cancer portal since the disease was declared notifiable on April 7, according to The Hindu and Deccan Chronicle.
Government advisor and oncologist Dr Nori Dattatreyudu said the portal is a significant step for strengthening cancer surveillance and treatment during a review meeting on Tuesday, November 3.
Dr Dattatreyudu noted that declaring cancer a notifiable disease and using a registry will assist the state in monitoring and controlling the illness.
Health Minister C. Damodar Raja Narasimha said the government has extended cancer services to all 33 districts, including day-care centres that allow patients to receive chemotherapy near their homes.
The Minister also stated that steps have been taken to establish Regional Cancer Centres to improve infrastructure.
Regarding prevention, Dr Dattatreyudu said 2.3 lakh out of 3.4 lakh eligible girls in the state have been vaccinated against the Human Papillomavirus (HPV), reaching 67 per cent coverage.
During the meeting, officials briefed the Minister on facilities at the MNJ Cancer Hospital and the Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS).
The Minister directed officials to make four more mobile cancer screening units operational by January.
