Severe Cyclone Murasu begins landfall near Ongole in Andhra Pradesh

The India Meteorological Department has warned of a storm surge and heavy rainfall across South Coastal Andhra Pradesh.

The landfall process of Severe Cyclonic Storm Murasu commenced at 1 a.m. on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, near Ongole, according to The Hindu. The inner spiral band of the storm entered South Coastal Andhra Pradesh in the northern sector, with the wall cloud region located very close to the coast.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that wind speeds of 100-110 kmph, with gusts up to 120 kmph, are expected near the landfall point. These wind speeds are likely to prevail along and off the coast until Tuesday morning.

The IMD has warned of a storm surge that may inundate low-lying areas in South Coastal Andhra Pradesh, specifically over Bapatla, Krishna, and Prakasam districts. Heavy rainfall is also expected in the region over the next 12 hours.

In Prakasam district, Kothapatnam recorded 74.7 mm of rain as of 1 a.m., while Ongole city recorded 18 mm. In the nearby Krishna district, many places recorded moderate rains between late Monday night and early Tuesday morning.

IMD Director General Mritunjay Mohapatra stated that the impact of Murasu would be comparatively lower than Cyclone Arnab, which had maximum landfall winds of 150 kmph. The storm is moving west-northwest at about 27 kmph.

In Odisha, several districts have been placed under warnings for heavy rain and thunderstorms. Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Gajapati, and Ganjam are under an orange warning for heavy to very heavy rain and winds of 50-60 kmph.
