Cyclone Murasu delays winter onset in West Bengal, says weather department

Temperatures are expected to dip ahead of Kali Puja on November 8 as weather conditions improve from Thursday.

The meteorological department said on Tuesday that the indirect impact of Cyclone Murasu has delayed the onset of winter in West Bengal, leaving temperatures above normal across the state.

According to The Hawk, the cyclone made landfall along the Andhra Pradesh coast and has triggered heavy rainfall forecasts, including a red alert for coastal areas of Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and Tamil Nadu.

While West Bengal is unlikely to face a direct impact, scattered rainfall is expected in several parts of the state on Tuesday under the cyclone's influence.

In south Bengal, isolated light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms is likely in Kolkata, Howrah, Hooghly, North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, East Midnapore, West Midnapore, Jhargram, Bankura and Purulia.

In north Bengal, Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Kalimpong, Alipurduar and Cooch Behar may receive light rainfall at one or two places, while the remaining three districts are expected to stay dry.

Weather conditions are expected to improve from Thursday, November 5, with temperatures likely to fall progressively as cloud cover clears, bringing winter chill ahead of Kali Puja on November 8.
