Consult doctors before starting dietary supplements, says expert

Dr Rituja Ugalmugle advises individuals to check for nutritional needs, correct dosages, and potential medication interactions before taking vitamins.

Dr Rituja Ugalmugle, Consultant of Internal Medicine at Wockhardt Hospitals, Mumbai Central, has shared three key considerations for people before they begin taking dietary supplements, according to The Indian Express.

Dr Ugalmugle stated that supplements should address a specific nutritional need rather than being taken as a precaution. She noted that requirements depend on an individual's age, lifestyle, health condition, and diet.

The expert explained that people with diagnosed nutritional deficiencies, certain absorption problems, or restricted diets may require supplementation. She said a doctor may recommend blood tests to identify deficiencies in iron or vitamin B12 and vitamin D levels.

Dr Ugalmugle cautioned against self-prescribing based on recommendations from friends or social media. She said unnecessary supplementation could lead to side effects, excessive nutrient levels, or a delay in diagnosing underlying health problems.

Regarding dosage, the consultant said that taking more than the recommended amount does not guarantee better results and can harm the body. She advised following the prescribed duration and dosage instead of increasing quantities independently.

The doctor also advised reading labels to check active ingredients and serving sizes. She noted that people taking medication for heart conditions, blood pressure, diabetes, or blood thinning should be careful as supplements can alter how medicines work.
