A group of people allegedly tried to kidnap a woman carrying gold worth Rs 1.1 crore and attacked police officers.

A gang allegedly attempted to abduct a woman carrying smuggled gold at Calicut International Airport in Karipur around 3 am on Monday, according to reports by Deccan Herald and Mathrubhumi.

The woman, identified as Abhirami (27) from Vandanmedu in Idukki, was intercepted in the airport parking lot by a group of approximately 10 people in two cars.

Police intervened when the group tried to seize the woman's luggage, leading to a clash where a home guard, Murali Krishna, was bitten.

During the incident, members of the gang attempted to flee in a vehicle and tried to run over a special police squad member, who escaped by jumping to the roadside.

Authorities recovered 14 gold plates weighing 817 grams from an emergency lamp inside the woman's baggage, valued at approximately Rs 1.1 crore.

Four people have been arrested, including Abhirami, Harshal (40) from Ernakulam, and Sayanth (28) and Babilesh (40) from Kallachi in Nadapuram.

The woman and Harshal, who had arrived to pick her up, were handed over to the Customs Department, while the two arrested gang members were remanded to judicial custody.

Police are continuing searches to apprehend the remaining gang members from the Nadapuram area.
