Onion prices in Goa reach nearly Rs 70 per kg

Retail rates have climbed due to lower crop yields and reduced arrivals from neighbouring markets like Belagavi, according to Urban Acres.

Retail onion prices in Goa have risen to nearly Rs 70 per kg because of limited supplies and higher wholesale rates in Belagavi, according to Urban Acres.

Supplier Abdul Niralgi told the Times of India that wholesale prices in Belagavi have reached Rs 52 per kg. Onions arriving in Goa are being sold for approximately Rs 60 per kg, while retail prices across the state range between Rs 60 and Rs 70 per kg.

Niralgi said the shortage is caused by lower production and a smaller yield from the second harvest. He noted that poor rainfall affected the crop, which limited the amount entering the markets and increased domestic prices.

Vendors at the Panaji market also stated that prices are unlikely to drop soon as fresh supplies have not increased enough. Vendor Jaffar Mokashi said that while prices usually rise between Navratri and Diwali, the current increase is linked to lower agricultural production rather than the festive season.

Suppliers and vendors indicated that consumers may face high prices until market availability improves.
