Goa disburses Rs 1.3 crore relief for Vasco market fire victims

Chief minister Pramod Sawant distributed aid to 103 claimants following a fire that damaged 145 shops at the modern market complex.

Chief minister Pramod Sawant distributed Rs 1.3 crore in relief on Monday to 103 claimants whose 145 shops were damaged in a fire at the Vasco modern market complex. According to reports from Urban Acres and The Times of India, the blaze occurred on a Wednesday night.

The compensation covers vendors who lost goods, including ready-made garments stocked for Diwali. Sawant stated that the aid was released within 120 hours, which he noted was faster than the eight days previously required to settle claims for flood-affected people.

To speed up the process, the government set up a help desk on Thursday to review claims. Sawant said there was no discrimination in the distribution and that the amount was calculated based on the number of shops each person operated before the fire.

The chief minister has instructed the Public Works Department (PWD) to speed up rebuilding efforts. He said a temporary structure would be ready in one month to allow traders to resume their business operations.

The remaining relief funds will be distributed approximately eight days before the traders move into the temporary premises. The government has stated it will continue to support the traders until they re-establish their businesses.

An investigation into the cause of the fire has been launched to determine how the blaze started.
