Doctors remove scissors from 3-year-old girl's chest in Gujarat

A toddler from Kutch is recovering after a specialised medical team at Civil Hospital Ahmedabad successfully performed emergency surgery.

A 3-year-old girl from Kutch has survived after doctors at Civil Hospital Ahmedabad removed a pair of sharp scissors embedded in her chest, according to WION.

The accident occurred around 11 am last month while the toddler was playing with her 5-year-old brother. Following the injury, she was taken to a private facility and then to a hospital in Gandhidham for a CT scan, before being referred to Ahmedabad.

The girl was admitted to Civil Hospital Ahmedabad at 10 pm that night for emergency surgery. The operation was conducted by the Pediatric Surgery department, overseen by Department Head Dr Rakesh Joshi and led by Assistant Professors Dr Kashvi and Dr Mrinalini.

The surgical team, which included anaesthetists, removed the scissors without damaging vital organs. The patient is currently stable and is expected to be discharged from the hospital soon.

Medical experts noted that the child's small size and age helped limit the impact, preventing the blades from breaking through the rib bone. They stated that if the object had shifted slightly, it could have hit major blood vessels or the trachea.

Civil Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr Rakesh Joshi advised parents to monitor what young children play with and keep sharp objects out of reach. He added that parents should seek immediate medical help if a child has difficulty breathing after an accident.
