Stakeholders meet to boost air cargo movement from Coimbatore
The cargo facilitation committee held its first meeting in six years to discuss increasing export and import volumes at the airport.
Trade and industry representatives, freight forwarders, and shipping agents met with the director of the Airports Authority of India (AAI) in Coimbatore on Tuesday. The meeting focused on strategies to enhance cargo movement from the Coimbatore International Airport, according to The Hindu.
R. Rajeshkumar, president of the Custom Broker & Shipping Agents’ Association, stated that the cargo facilitation committee meeting took place after a gap of six years. He noted that there is significant potential to improve air cargo operations in the region.
Rajeshkumar said that Fly Dubai is prepared to provide two to three chartered flights per week and has requested information regarding import and export trade potential. He added that much of the current air export and import volume is routed through Kochi, Chennai, or Bengaluru.
The association is currently working to collect data on these trade details. The airport serves a large volume of export cargo generated from the Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Erode, and Nilgiris districts.
The committee is scheduled to meet again in February to progress with measures intended to increase air cargo movement from the airport.
