MP Chamala Kiran Kumar Reddy blames BRS for high power plant costs

The Bhuvanagiri Lok Sabha member alleged the Yadadri Thermal Power Plant will cost Telangana an extra ₹1 lakh crore over 40 years.

Bhuvanagiri Lok Sabha member Chamala Kiran Kumar Reddy alleged on Tuesday that the Yadadri Thermal Power Plant (YTPP) will cost Telangana an additional ₹1 lakh crore over its 40-year period of operation. According to The Hindu, the MP made these claims during a public hearing organised by the Telangana Electricity Regulatory Commission (TGERC).

Mr. Kiran Kumar Reddy criticised the previous Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) government for choosing a site near the Andhra Pradesh border instead of a location closer to water and coal resources. He also alleged that using subcritical technology at the Yadadri and Bhadradri thermal power stations has significantly raised the cost of generating power.

The MP claimed the Yadadri plant requires G9-grade coal, which means coal must be sourced from Coal India and from abroad. He noted that the Bhadradri Thermal Power Station began operations under the BRS regime, while the Congress government made the Yadadri plant operational after taking power.

Mr. Kiran Kumar Reddy also accused the BRS leader and former Energy Minister G. Jagadish Reddy of making misleading statements regarding the power sector in the State.

He further alleged that the BRS government privatised the Sathupalli and Koyagudem coal blocks, placing debt on Telangana.
