NHAI implements safety measures at two Bengaluru accident blackspots
The improvements at Byatarayanapura and Kodigehalli junctions aim to reduce fatalities and enhance pedestrian safety on Ballari Road.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has introduced road safety improvements at two accident-prone junctions, Byatarayanapura and Kodigehalli, on Ballari Road (NH-44) in Bengaluru. According to The Hindu, these north Bengaluru junctions were identified as recurring accident blackspots.
The Bengaluru Traffic Police Road Safety Report 2019–2023 noted that Byatarayanapura recorded 11 fatalities and Kodigehalli reported six deaths during that period. Pedestrians accounted for approximately 30 per cent of these deaths.
The NHAI stated that the upgrades include 1,600 square metres of new footpaths, 240 square metres of pedestrian refuge areas, and 133 metres of safe pedestrian crossings. Speed-calming measures, road markings, road studs, and safety signage were also installed to regulate vehicle speeds and improve visibility.
These works were carried out in coordination with the Bengaluru Traffic Police, Greater Bengaluru Authority, and the Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited. WRI India provided technical support under the Bloomberg Philanthropies Initiative for Global Road Safety and Compartment S4.
The NHAI reported that Karnataka recorded 4,278 fatalities on National Highways in 2024. In Bengaluru, 793 road deaths were reported, which included 140 deaths on National Highway stretches.
