Tamil Nadu leads in research and patent applications in Niti Aayog report
Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, and Maharashtra emerged as the top three states for research publications on Tuesday.
Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, and Maharashtra have emerged as the leading states in research publications according to the India Science and Technology (S&T) Scoreboard launched on Tuesday, Rediff reported. The scoreboard is an interactive platform by Niti Aayog designed to assist states in identifying strengths and addressing gaps in science and technology policy.
In terms of research publications for 2024-25, Tamil Nadu recorded 44,611, while Uttar Pradesh had 29,298 and Maharashtra had 28,947. Tamil Nadu also led in patent applications, followed by Maharashtra and Karnataka.
Niti Aayog Vice Chairman Ashok Kumar Lahiri said that for India to advance in science and technology, states must play a more engaged role. He stated that the scoreboard would help states design better programmes by using the principles of cooperative and competitive federalism.
Niti Aayog Member (S&T) Abhay Karandikar noted that previous data on research and innovation was spread across different sources, making it hard for states to evaluate their position. He said the new dashboard brings ecosystem, publication, and patent data together to help states track progress over time.
Department of Science and Technology Secretary Umesh V Waghmare said the scoreboard provides a useful state-level view for the national evidence base. The platform includes data on higher education institutions, R&D labs, deep tech startups, and incubators.
