West Bengal board proposes shifting 2027 Madhyamik exams to March

The West Bengal Board of Secondary Education seeks to postpone Class 10 exams due to teacher deployment for the nationwide Census.

The West Bengal Board of Secondary Education (WBBSE) has proposed postponing the 2027 Madhyamik (Class 10) examinations from February to March, according to reports by The Economic Times and The Indian Express.

Board president Laltu Das told PTI that the proposal was made because teachers who conduct exams will be deployed for the Census enumeration exercise in February.

The board has submitted a revised schedule to the state School Education Department. The proposal suggests conducting the exams from March 2 to March 16, instead of the original dates of February 15 to February 25.

The Census field enumeration is scheduled to begin on January 25 and continue until February 28, or conclude by March 1, 2027. The Census Commissioner of India, Mritunjay Kumar Narayan, requested that examining authorities avoid scheduling major papers before March 18, 2027, to prevent disruption.

School Education Minister Dipak Burman said the proposal is yet to be finalised and the department is considering it. The West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education (WBCHSE) is also expected to submit a proposal to defer Class 12 examinations to after Holi.

Under the proposed Madhyamik schedule, examinations would be held from 10.45 am to 2 pm, with 15 minutes for reading the question paper and answer writing starting at 11 am.
