Assam cabinet recommends CBI probe into Sivasagar and Charaideo floods
The state government also approved a 2,000-acre defence manufacturing park and five ropeway projects to improve regional mobility.
The Assam cabinet has recommended a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into the floods that started in Sivasagar and Charaideo around July 19, according to Urban Acres.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that the state will submit a formal request to the CBI in the next 10 days. Sarma noted that the decision to accept the recommendation and carry out the investigation rests with the Centre and the investigating agency.
The proposed probe aims to investigate the primary causes of the flooding in the two districts. The cabinet also approved a defence manufacturing and production park in Jagiroad covering approximately 2,000 acres. The land is to be transferred to the industries department, with the state potentially acquiring private land following talks with owners.
Sarma said the park is intended to draw investment and allow Assam to participate in the country's growing defence production sector. The state plans to hold roadshows to find anchor investors for various defence products.
To improve mobility, the cabinet approved the formation of the Ropeway Development Authority, a joint venture with 51 per cent equity held by the Centre and 49 per cent by Assam. Five ropeway routes were approved, including connections from Kamakhya railway station to Kamakhya Temple and Khanapara to Guwahati railway station.
Additionally, the cabinet amended the Assam Civil Services (Conduct) Rules. Following the notification of the Uniform Civil Code, government employees found guilty of entering polygamous marriages will face dismissal for major misconduct.
