PM Surya Ghar scheme achieves one lakh solar installations every six days

Union Minister Prahlad Joshi said the initiative has become a mass movement with targets to reach one crore households by March 2027.

The PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana is currently completing approximately one lakh rooftop solar installations every six days, according to ANI and The Hindu.

Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Prahlad Joshi said during a media interaction at the Bharat Renewable Energy Summit & Expo 2026 that the government expects to accelerate this pace to one lakh installations every four to five days within the next two to three weeks.

Joshi noted that the scheme faced initial challenges including a time-consuming installation process, portal problems, and difficulties identifying vendors. He added that implementation was also delayed by the Model Code of Conduct during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

The initiative, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 15 February 2024, aims to supply solar power to one crore households by March 2027. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) expects installations to exceed 10 lakh by March 2025 and reach 40 lakh by March 2026.

The programme currently has around 65.65 lakh beneficiaries and has crossed 55 lakh installations. The scheme offers a subsidy of up to 40 per cent to households to make renewable energy more affordable.

Joshi expressed confidence that the target would be completed by March 31, 2027, stating that the utility-led aggregation model is working.
