Tamil Nadu transfers poramboke land to Sankaraperi TNHB in Thoothukudi
The Revenue and Disaster Management Department issued a Government Order to transfer land for residential use after 30 years.
The Revenue and Disaster Management Department has issued a Government Order transferring land classified as a government poramboke dumpyard to the Sankaraperi Tamil Nadu Housing Board (TNHB) in Thoothukudi, according to The New Indian Express.
The order, dated October 21, 2026, transfers 29.47 acres of land from survey numbers 101, 102, 103, 104, and 105/2 of Sankaraperi Panchayat to the TNHB. The land was previously classified as a government porambokku dumpyard and Thiruvalluvar Panimanai.
The transfer follows a field inspection by the District Revenue Officer and a resolution from the Thoothukudi Municipality passed on February 21, 1991. The district administration submitted a proposal to the state government in August 2025 after petitions were sent to Thoothukudi MP Kanimozhi in 2025.
The TNHB reportedly acquired the land from Sankaraperi Panchayat in 1987 and distributed 1,055 housing plots in 1992. However, residents lived without land patta for 30 years because the land classification was not correctly changed, preventing them from accessing home loans and other services.
Praveen of the DMK, who worked on the land classification transfer, said the move provides relief to residents who have sought patta for three decades. He stated that the housing board will now take steps to secure patta for the residents.
