IPS officer Anurag Sujania resigns after removal as Sagar SP

The 2014 batch officer submitted his resignation on November 2 following his removal from the Sagar district post.

IPS officer Anurag Sujania, 38, has resigned from government service after being removed as the superintendent of police (SP) in Sagar, according to the Hindustan Times.

Sujania, a 2014 batch officer, submitted his resignation on November 2. He was recently posted as assistant inspector general (AIG) at the police headquarters after the government transferred the district SP and collector Pratibha Pal on October 27.

A senior IPS officer confirmed the development, stating that Sujania resigned due to personal reasons and his request has been forwarded to the state government.

The officer's removal followed a hooch tragedy in Sagar district's Banda area on September 7, where at least 20 people died after consuming spurious liquor. Another 100 people were hospitalised in that incident.

Opposition leader and former chief minister Digvijaya Singh had previously criticised Sujania, noting that 24 people died in Morena district in 2021 when Sujania was the SP there. An investigation at that time suggested illicit liquor was being sold under police protection, leading to his removal as Morena SP.

The state government is yet to decide on the resignation. Chief minister Mohan Yadav convened a meeting of senior police officers on Tuesday to review the state's law and order situation and discuss curbing the liquor mafia.
