Madhya Pradesh police officer killed during illicit liquor truck interception

Station House Officer Dilip Puri died and a constable was injured during a Monday operation in Dewas district.

A police officer was killed and a constable was injured on Monday while attempting to intercept a truck carrying illicit liquor in the Dewas district of Madhya Pradesh, according to Rediff.

Khategaon Station House Officer (SHO) Dilip Puri was attempting to stop the vehicle near the Narmada Dhaba at Sandalpur crossing on the Indore-Betul highway. Officials stated the driver allegedly drove the truck over Puri and onto a road divider to escape, resulting in the officer's death. Constable Sohan Jat was also injured during the incident.

Police seized more than 1,800 litres of illicit liquor from the truck, which was reportedly being moved from Timarni in Harda district to Gujarat. Authorities have arrested suspected kingpin Rahul Jaiswal, accomplice Vijay Rao, and Karam Singh, who allegedly provided the vehicle. The driver, Gajendra, also known as Akku Rawat, and his assistant are currently absconding.

Dewas Superintendent of Police has offered a reward of Rs 10,000 for information that leads to the arrest of the fugitives. Special Director General of Police Upendra Jain said investigation teams are active across five districts to trace the accused.

Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has ordered an impartial probe into the incident. He announced Rs 1 crore in financial assistance for the family of the deceased officer and directed that his wife be provided a job as a sub-inspector on compassionate grounds.

The incident has led to political tension, with the Congress party alleging mafia rule in the state. The BJP has countered these claims by making accusations against Congress leaders.
